چکیده

A new system for speech visualisation, has been implemented to allow deaf and hearing-impaired people to understand verbal information over channels such as the ordinary public telephone system. Incorporating a computational model of the human ear, the system converts incoming sounds into a sequence of animated images, which show the temporal variations of the spectral pattern of the input sound in real-time and which are perceived like visual gestures. Preliminary results from forced-choice tests with 28 human subjects are reported, using a sequence of 2to 4-word sets. To demonstrate the language independence of this approach, some of these were taken from 4 very different languages English, Persian, French and Czech. The results show high levels of recognition after only 10 learning trials (typical mean scores of 50-85%, where zero represents chance expectation), and encourage further investigation.

Intentional and attentional dynamics of speech-hand coordination.

Interest is rapidly growing in the hypothesis that natural language emerged from a more primitive set of linguistic acts based primarily on manual activity and hand gestures. Increasingly, researchers are investigating how hemispheric asymmetries are related to attentional and manual asymmetries (i.e., handedness). Both speech perception and production have origins in the dynamical generative m...

Integrating Audio and Visual Information for Modelling Communicative Behaviours Perceived as Different

In human face-to-face interaction, participants can rely on a number of audio-visual information for interpreting interlocutors’ communicative intentions, such information strongly contributing to the successfulness of communication. Modelling these typical human abilities represents a main objective in human communication research, including technological applications like human-machine intera...

Dynamical spectrogram, an aid for the deaf

Visual perception of speech through spectrogram reading has long been a subject of research, as an aid for the deaf or hearing impaired. Attributing the lack of success in this type of visual aids mainly to the static form of information presented by the spectrograms, this paper proposes a system of dynamic visualisation for speech sounds. This system samples a high resolved, auditorybased spec...

The visual mismatch negativity elicited with visual speech stimuli

The visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), deriving from the brain's response to stimulus deviance, is thought to be generated by the cortex that represents the stimulus. The vMMN response to visual speech stimuli was used in a study of the lateralization of visual speech processing. Previous research suggested that the right posterior temporal cortex has specialization for processing simple non-sp...

Mental Timeline in Persian Speakers’ Co-speech Gestures based on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory

One of the introduced conceptual metaphors is the metaphor of "time as space". Time as an abstract concept is conceptualized by a concrete concept like space. This conceptualization of time is also reflected in co-speech gestures. In this research, we try to find out what dimension and direction the mental timeline has in co-speech gestures and under the influence of which one of the metaphoric...
